More about this artwork
This sketch, titled "Au Cafe" by Gustave Caillebotte, captures an intimate and thoughtful moment inside a café. The foreground is dominated by a male figure, standing relaxed yet with a slightly apprehensive expression. His attire, consisting of a jacket and a vest, along with a hat slightly tilted on his head, hints at a casual yet self-aware demeanor. He has his hands tucked into his pockets, suggesting a laid-back or possibly contemplative posture. In the background, there is another figure, though much less defined, who appears to be seated facing away from the viewer. This background character enhances the depth of the scene and contributes to the ambiance of a social yet introspective café environment. The details within the scene, such as the table with a drinking glass and possibly a cup or ashtray, further engrain the setting in a typical café milieu of the period. Caillebotte's use of soft, sketchy lines and minimalistic detail focuses our attention more on the mood and expression of the central figure than on elaborate background details. This technique effectively conveys a sense of momentary pause, perhaps reflecting the inner thoughts of the individual or the general atmosphere of contemplative solitude that can often be found in such social settings.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter who combined impressionist and academic styles in his artworks. Despite the fact that he is considered a great impressionist artist today, his posthumous reputation was not as significant. Most of his paintings were kept by his family and not exhibited nor reproduced until the late 20th century. His artworks depict scenes from Parisian streets, modern urban environments, as well as rural country scenes and flowers.
