More about this artwork
We are delighted to showcase on our website a remarkable piece by Gustave Caillebotte titled "Maisons À Argenteuil" from the year 1883. This enchanting tableau is a vivid portrayal of everyday life in the suburban landscapes of Argenteuil, a town that was frequently visited by Impressionist painters in the late 19th century. In this painting, Caillebotte captures a serene corner of the town, showing a quiet street lined with charming houses. The foreground is dominated by a rustic stone wall that encloses one of the houses. A simple green door punctuates the otherwise uninterrupted expanse of the wall, inviting speculation about the hidden garden or courtyard that lies beyond. Above the wall, the upper stories of the houses can be seen, their windows shuttered against the summer heat. The composition is freshened with verdant touches of trellised greenery and flowering plants that peek over the wall and from balconies, adding bursts of color and life. One of the painting’s most striking features is the dappled light that filters through the leaves of the prominently placed tree in the top right corner, casting playful shadows and lending an air of tranquility and natural beauty to the scene.Gustave Caillebotte's "Maisons À Argenteuil" is a testament to the artist's keen observation and his ability to transform a simple architectural scene into a canvas brimming with emotion and atmosphere.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter who combined impressionist and academic styles in his artworks. Despite the fact that he is considered a great impressionist artist today, his posthumous reputation was not as significant. Most of his paintings were kept by his family and not exhibited nor reproduced until the late 20th century. His artworks depict scenes from Parisian streets, modern urban environments, as well as rural country scenes and flowers.
