More about this artwork

This painting by Alfred William Finch, titled "Chrysanthemums," created in 1927, depicts a vivid and dynamic arrangement of chrysanthemum flowers that take center stage in the composition. These blooms, rendered with thick and expressive brushstrokes, exhibit a range of colors from soft, creamy yellows to bold reds and deep oranges, suggesting vitality and a sense of depth.Beyond the floral display, there is an intriguing play of objects within the scene. A bowl with a classically styled figure, perhaps evoking an aura of ancient Greek or Roman art, sits partially obscured behind the lush bouquet. This bowl, along with a more plainly visible blue one and a striking yellow vase that houses the chrysanthemums, introduces a subtle narrative or symbolic element—implying a setting of cultivated beauty that appreciates both the liveliness of nature's blossoms and a reverence for classic forms. The use of vibrant color contrasts and a rich texture enforced by visible and energetic brushwork creates a lively tableau that radiates warmth. It is indicative of Finch's transition to a more impressionistic style, focusing on color and light. The picture feels intimate yet expansive, drawing the viewer's eye back and forth among the flowers, pottery, and hints of a designed space behind.Altogether, the painting's rich textures, vibrant colors, and thoughtful composition make it a deep and visually engaging piece that reflects Finch's skill in blending natural subjects with stylistic expressionism.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
