More about this artwork

"Woman in Profile, 1915" by Alfred William Finch is a captivating expressionist portrait that features a woman, depicted in profile. The woman, wearing a dark hat and a greenish coat, is engrossed in an activity at a table. She appears to be deeply focused, perhaps reading or examining something that is out of the viewer's sight. Her posture and the tilt of her head contribute to the sense of quiet concentration. The color palette is rich with deep blues, greens, and yellows, creating a warm yet introspective atmosphere. The brushwork is loose and vibrant, characteristic of Finch’s style, which adds a textural depth to the image. The background contains elements like a painting or mirror, as well as what appears to be a wall or partition, which are rendered in abstract forms and patches of color, subtly framing the central figure and leading the viewer's focus towards her. This artwork exemplifies Finch’s skill in using color and form to convey mood and personality, making it a poignant piece reflecting both the external portrayal and the internal psyche of the subject. The painting is vibrant yet contemplative, allowing the viewer to feel a connection with the quiet moment being depicted.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
