More about this artwork

The painting "Puuharjoitelma" by Alfred William Finch, beautifully rendered in soft, subtle washes of watercolor, presents an abstract impression of a tree or shrub. The choice of predominantly green and blue hues imbues a natural, organic feel, suggesting foliage and the play of light and shadow within it. The method appears loose and spontaneous, allowing the colors to bleed and merge at edges, which enhances the ethereal and impressionistic quality of the work.Finch's technique here emphasizes the fluidity of watercolors, showcasing his mastery in creating depth and texture with minimal brush strokes. The composition is airy and seemingly unfinished, which might suggest the artist's intent to capture a fleeting moment or mood rather than a detailed literal representation. The ample negative space around the subject serves to focus our attention on the delicately formed central mass, evoking a sense of isolation and tranquility."Arnold Drawing" and "Imperial 72lbs. NOT." notes printed in the corner of the paper indicate that this art piece might have been created on a specific type of watercolor paper which perhaps contributed to the texture and absorption effects evident in Finch's painting. This, combined with Finch's strikingly minimalist approach, invites viewers to engage their imagination, making 'Puuharjoitelma' a quietly compelling piece of art.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
