More about this artwork

This painting, "The Briar Rose Series - Study For 'The Garden Court'" by Edward Burne-Jones, features a serene and contemplative image of a young woman dressed in flowing robes. The colors are notably muted yet rich, creating a gentle contrast with the pale background. The woman is depicted in a reclining pose, her body turned slightly to the side while her gaze is directed downward, suggesting a moment of introspection or melancholy. The artwork's gentle brushwork and subtle shading techniques are indicative of Burne-Jones' style, which often draws on themes from the Pre-Raphaelite movement, focusing on beauty, detail, and a narrative depth. Here, the use of soft blue and muted gold tones adds a dreamy, otherworldly quality to the figure, emphasizing the romantic and mythical elements that are typical in Burne-Jones' art.In the background, faintly sketched lines suggest the presence of plants or vines, possibly alluding to the "briar rose" theme—a reference to the tale of Sleeping Beauty, which Burne-Jones explored in a series of paintings. This sketch might be a preliminary study, focusing on capturing the mood and posture of the figure as part of a larger composition planned for "The Garden Court." The detailed representation of the woman’s attire and the graceful folds of her garment showcase the artist’s attention to texture and fabric, essential elements that bring a static image to life with a sense of motion and realism.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
