More about this artwork

The painting "Cupid and Psyche" by Edward Burne-Jones is rich in narrative and beautifully detailed, embodying the Pre-Raphaelite style's characteristic attention to detail and romantic flair. The scene depicted illustrates a compelling moment from the mythological tale of Cupid and Psyche, focusing here on the trials of Psyche. In this particular work, Psyche is portrayed in the center of the composition, her figure draped in flowing white fabric that highlights her purity and the almost ethereal quality of her character. She holds a small vessel in her hands, suggesting she is on a quest or completing a task — a common theme in the story where she must perform a series of seemingly impossible feats to prove herself worthy of her lover, Cupid. To the left, a group of individuals appears involved in an emotional or dynamic action, perhaps depicting a moment of struggle or desperation related to Psyche's trials. The presence of various elements such as sacks and vessels might indicate a scene of labor or preparation, suggestive of the challenges Psyche faces. On the right side of the painting, there are figures operating what appears to be a loom, an ancient device used for weaving. The characters at the loom, possibly the Fates, are often depicted in myths as controlling the destiny of individuals, weaving the threads of life.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
