More about this artwork

"The Love Song" by Edward Burne-Jones portrays a scene steeped in Romanticism and symbolic depth. In this painting, there are three main figures set against a lush, detailed backdrop of a medieval or Renaissance-era landscape. On the left side of the composition, a knight in dark, reflective armor reclines on the ground. His gaze is directed intently toward the central female figure, who is positioned at a harpsichord. His posture and expression suggest a gentle pensiveness, possibly indicating his feelings or a thoughtful contemplation triggered by the music. The central figure, a woman dressed in a flowing, golden robe, is engaged in playing the harpsichord. Her expression is serene yet focused, embodying the role of both a muse and an active participant in the scene. Her fingers delicately touching the keys and her poised demeanor suggest a deep connection to the music she produces, which likely symbolizes the emotional or spiritual communication between her and the knight. To the right, another figure, a winged angel or muse, leans against the harpsichord, seemingly lulled to a gentle sleep by the music. Dressed in a vibrant red gown with a large, flowing purple headpiece, the angel adds a mystical or heavenly element to the scene, emphasizing the transcendent nature of the music and its impact. The background features a detailed and idyllic landscape with architectural elements suggesting a peaceful, possibly sacred setting.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
