More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "The Briar Rose Series - Study For 'The Garden Court,'" is a captivating study that prepares viewers for the larger work it precedes. It beautifully captures a single figure, a sleeping woman, who is a part of the Briar Rose narrative inspired by the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. The composition showcases the woman slumped against what appears to be a structure of wood, perhaps a part of the garden court. She is dressed in a flowing gown that glistens in a subtle manner, suggesting the texture of luxurious fabric. Her peaceful face and closed eyes communicate a deep, enchanted sleep.Around and behind her, we see delicate vines or branches that enhance the theme of nature overtaking the scene, commonly associated with the sleeping quarters of Briar Rose, enveloped by the magical thorny briar. The use of soft background colors and subtle shading make the figure stand out, accentuating her serene, almost ethereal quality.Edward Burne-Jones' art, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, often features mythological and medieval themes portrayed with an almost dreamlike realism. This study serves both as a standalone piece and an integral part of exploring and understanding the composition and emotional depth intended in the larger works of the Briar Rose series.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
