More about this artwork

"Angel Playing On Bells" by Edward Burne-Jones is a striking artwork that showcases the artist's fondness for spiritual and mythological themes, typical of the Pre-Raphaelite movement with which he was associated. In this depiction, the painting, rendered in a monochromatic tone, features a solitary angel within a circular frame, which may signify a sense of completeness or divine wholeness. The angel, adorned with a flowing robe and magnificent, detailed wings, stands gracefully as it reaches above to play a set of bells. The gentle action captured suggests a moment of musical creation, possibly invoking peace or celestial harmony through its sound. The angel's expression, serene yet focused, adds to the tranquil and somewhat ethereal mood of the piece. The use of soft lines and simple yet expressive forms accentuates the angel's delicate demeanour and the spiritual aura surrounding the act of bell-playing.This artwork, like many others by Burne-Jones, emphasizes beauty and purity through its symbolic content and gentle execution, encouraging viewers to contemplate the serene and spiritual dimensions of life. The circular design not only frames the subject but also draws the viewer's eye into the center of the composition, focusing on the angel’s gentle interaction with the bells. This piece is a beautiful example of how Burne-Jones fused artistic skill with rich symbolism to convey profound spiritual narratives.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
