More about this artwork

This intriguing painting titled "Eve" by Edward Burne-Jones illustrates a depiction of Eve from the biblical story of the Garden of Eden. It captures her in a moment of serene interaction with her environment, possibly before the fall from innocence. The artwork has a very stylized and graphic quality, reminiscent of Art Nouveau designs. Eve is depicted with long, flowing hair that cascades down her body, emphasizing her femininity and the fluidity of the natural forms around her. She stands amidst an abundance of foliage, interacting gently with the trees and leaves, which are highly decorative and almost symbolic in their representation. The color palette is quite restricted, with sepia tones dominating, giving the image a timeless and classic look. This could suggest the universality and everlasting relevance of the story of Eve. The flatness of the forms, combined with the intricate patterns of the leaves and branches, suggests a tapestry-like quality, echoing the arts and crafts movement influences typical of Burne-Jones' work.Eve's expression appears contemplative, capturing perhaps a moment of innocence or introspection right before the impending temptation and fall. This painting not only portrays a biblical figure but also reflects the artist's interest in themes of mythology, legend, and human emotion, wrapped in a distinctive aesthetic style that evokes both the medieval and the modern.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
