More about this artwork

This painting, titled "With The Wind" by Edward Burne-Jones, presents a beautiful and ethereal depiction, enclosed within a circular frame, which is commonly known as a tondo. The artwork features a solitary figure, likely a woman, enveloped in flowing robes that elegantly billow around her, mimicking the movement of the wind. Her pose, with one arm extended and the other close to her chest, along with her slightly bent knees, suggests she is either bracing against the wind or being gracefully carried by it.The color palette is subtle yet luminous; deep blues and silvers dominate, evoking a sense of twilight or the mysterious glow of moonlight. These colors not only enhance the enigmatic quality of the image but also emphasize the feeling of movement and fluidity suggested by the wind.Burne-Jones's style here is reflective of his broader work in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, focusing on beauty, detailed craftsmanship, and an often dreamlike quality. The artwork might symbolize freedom, the force of nature, or the human spirit uplifting amidst the natural world's unseen forces.Overall, "With The Wind" captures a moment of harmony between human existence and the elemental world, rendered with exquisite grace and poetic visualization.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
