More about this artwork

"King Mark and La Belle Iseult" by Edward Burne-Jones is an evocative painting steeped in the rich visual style characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, to which Burne-Jones was associated. This artwork is grounded in the legendary tale of Tristan and Iseult, a story famous for its themes of love, honor, and betrayal. In the painting, two central figures dominate the composition. On the left, King Mark, wearing a dark, ornately decorated robe and a hat, stands with a relatively imposing stature. His face produces a sober, perhaps contemplative expression, while a sword hangs at his side, symbolizing his role and readiness as a ruler and warrior. King Mark’s gaze does not align directly with La Belle Iseult or the viewer, which adds a layer of narrative complexity and emotional detachment.Beside him stands La Belle Iseult, draped in a long, flowing gown that glistens with a light, almost ethereal quality under Burne-Jones' brush. Her posture, leaning gently towards King Mark, and the soft grasp of what appears to be either his arm or cloak, suggests intimacy or a longing for comfort. Her expression, however, mirrors a sense of sorrow or resignation, perhaps indicative of the tragic love story that envelops her character.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
