More about this artwork

The painting "Scattered Starwort" by Edward Burne-Jones is a visually captivating artwork housed within a circular frame. This artwork features three ethereal, angelic figures, each rendered in light, delicate colors that convey a sense of purity and otherworldliness. These figures appear to move gracefully through a celestial or vague dream-like landscape. The angels are adorned in flowing robes that give a sense of movement to the piece, with subtle folds and drapes of the fabric rendered in fine detail. Their wings are detailed with intricate feather patterns, shimmering with hints of blue and gold that complement the hints of the starwort flowers scattered beneath their feet. The color palette primarily consists of soft whites, pale blues, and golden hues that allude to a sense of the divine or unearthly realm. The composition draws the viewer's eye around the circle through the motions of the angels and the elegant positioning of their limbs and wings. Burne-Jones's style here shows his affinity for the Pre-Raphaelite movement’s interest in beauty, nature, and a connection to spiritual or mythical themes. The whole scene is imbued with a poetic and serene atmosphere, making it a reflection not just of a physical depiction of flowers or figures, but also an embodiment of beauty and spiritual grace that transcends ordinary perception. This painting is a typical display of Burne-Jones’ fascination with mythological subjects and his capability to mesh the natural with the supernatural through his distinctive aesthetic sense.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
