More about this artwork

"Flame Heath" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating circular painting that forms part of his series known as The Flower Book, which comprises a collection of watercolor illustrations produced to metaphorically represent different flowers. In this painting, we are presented with a visually intriguing scene set within a gently swirling landscape that seems almost dreamlike in its composition. The focal point of the artwork is a figure, dressed in what appears to be shimmering armor, gracefully reclining on a bed of heath. The figure is presumably amidst a struggle or rest, caught in a moment of solitude or exhaustion. The expression on the figure's face conveys a sense of tranquility or perhaps contemplation. The landscape around the figure flows with dynamic brushstrokes, suggesting movement, reflecting perhaps the undulating nature of the heat and wind typical of a heathland environment.Symbolically, the flame heath flower might be represented here through the golden and fiery tones of the brushwork around the figure. These colors invoke the element of fire, suggesting passion, energy, and renewal, which could be tied to the attributes of the flower itself. Burne-Jones's use of a circular format, rather typical of his work in The Flower Book, encapsulates the scene, giving it a sense of completeness and intimacy.Overall, "Flame Heath" shows Edward Burne-Jones's mastery in blending fantastical elements with natural settings, drawing viewers into a serene yet poignant pictorial narrative.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
