More about this artwork

"Ladder of Heaven from The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones is a compelling circular painting that beautifully blends elements of nature with a celestial theme. In this image, we observe a graceful figure clad in a flowing blue robe ascending a vibrant landscape. The figure holds a branch or wand, which might symbolize growth or a connection to the natural world surrounding them. The painting's composition is rich with color and contrast: a luminous sky in soft blues and cloudy whites forms the backdrop, while the earthy tones of the hills and fields stretch below. A bright, rainbow-like path beneath the figure adds a magical, almost ethereal touch to the scene, highlighting a journey or ascension that's full of hopeful undertones.Edward Burne-Jones was known for his involvement with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, famous for their revival of medieval styles and themes fused with intense emotion and vivid natural imagery. In this painting, the dreamlike quality and the inclusion of a solitary, contemplative figure align with these typical Pre-Raphaelite characteristics, conveying a narrative that is both visually arresting and symbolically deep.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
