More about this artwork

The painting "Angelus Ministrans" by Edward Burne-Jones features a majestic, ethereal figure depicted in a chalk or pencil medium on a dark backdrop, emphasizing a dramatic contrast. The figure, presumably an angel given the title, is dressed in flowing robes that suggest both grandeur and movement. The robes are illustrated with impressive detail in the shading and folds, adding to the sense of depth and texture. The angel is holding a staff which heightens its stately appearance. Positioned in a thoughtful pose, the angel’s face is slightly turned in a contemplative manner, suggesting a moment of solemn duty or reflection. Its head is adorned with what appears to be a wreath or crown, further elevating its divine status. The use of light in this artwork is particularly notable. The shimmering lines on the robes seem almost illuminated against the darker background, which might symbolize the spiritual illumination or guidance that angels are often depicted as providing.Overall, the artwork exudes a sense of serene grace and power, typical of Burne-Jones' work, which often explored themes from mythology and religion with a rich, symbolic style. "Angelus Ministrans" can be interpreted as a portrayal of an angel performing a sacred duty, ministering to unseen forces or beings, true to its title which suggests ministering or service.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
