More about this artwork

Edward Burne-Jones' "Quest for the Holy Grail - Study for The Attainment" is a captivating painting, rich in narrative and symbolism commonly associated with the Arthurian legends. This work is one part of a series that explores the mystical quest for the Holy Grail, an important element in Arthurian literature. The painting is divided into distinct yet interconnected scenes. On the left side, you can see a group of knights, each clad in armor and appearing solemn, as if preparing for or returning from a significant journey. These knights, including a figure kneeling in supplication, likely represent the questing knights of King Arthur's Round Table. They are standing amidst a dark forest, which symbolizes the unknown trials and tribulations they must face in their quest.Moving towards the right, the scene shifts from the dark, dense forest to a more celestial and divine setting. A solitary figure, possibly a knight or a sage due to his pious posture, approaches a golden gate guarded by angelic figures. The presence of angels and their peaceful demeanor contrasts sharply with the grim and readiness of the knights, signaling a transition to a realm of higher spiritual significance. Finally, the far right of the painting reveals the culmination of the quest. Inside the sanctuary-like space, a group of angelic beings surrounds the Holy Grail, now attained and placed upon an altar.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
