More about this artwork

This artwork, titled "Knob with White Medallion" by Albrecht Dürer, features an intricate, decorative design centered around a dark circular knob embellished with a pattern of interlocking shapes and roses. The central disc encloses a blank white medallion, which stands in stark contrast to the complexity surrounding it. Surrounding this circle is a rich array of decorative elements consisting of stylized foliage and scrollwork, adding an ornate frame to the central theme. The composition displays Dürer’s exquisite attention to detail and his mastery in creating complex, linear motifs. The design, primarily monochromatic, utilizes the contrast between dark and light areas to emphasize texture and pattern, engaging the viewer's eye in a rhythmic interplay of forms. This piece reflects characteristics typical of the Northern Renaissance, where such detailed and symbolic designs were prevalent in art and ornamentation. This could possibly be a design for a piece of decorative metalwork or another object, showcasing Albrecht Dürer’s versatility not just as a painter and printmaker, but also as a theorist and designer of decorative arts.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
