More about this artwork

This artwork, titled "Knob with Rounded Shield," created by Albrecht Dürer, looks like a masterpiece of intricate design typical of Dürer’s style, who was known for his detailed and precise engravings. This monochromatic piece seems to be a kind of decorative emblem featuring a rounded shield shape surrounded by floral motifs and elaborate, intertwined lattice or filigree work, giving it a richly ornamental appearance. In the center, the design intricately swirls into rounded, floral-like patterns that could suggest rosettes, which were commonly used in heraldic designs. The darker, starkly contrasting areas help highlight the finer white lines of the filigree, adding a dramatic effect to the overall composition. At the corners of the artwork, there are additional flourishes, each sprouting into elegant leaf-like figures, enhancing the ornamental quality and suggesting a blending of natural forms with geometric design elements.Dürer’s control over line and form here exemplifies his expertise in printmaking, likely employing techniques of the woodcut or engraving, which allowed for this high level of detail and textural depth. The overall effect is both decorative and symbolic, possibly intending to convey notions of protection and nobility, as suggested by the shield motif.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
