More about this artwork

The painting "The Boulevards" by Pierre Bonnard captures a vibrant street scene, bustling with the energy of urban life. The composition utilizes vivid and somewhat rough brushstrokes that convey movement and liveliness, characteristics often associated with Bonnard's work which focuses on color and light in intimate, everyday settings. In the image, the scene is divided into distinct blocks of color: dark greens and blacks on the left, depicting lush trees and shadows, and pale building facades filled with windows on the right, rendered in washed-out neutrals. The middle ground teems with people and activity. Figures in various forms of dress suggest a casual yet somewhat busy atmosphere, typical of a city boulevard.Notably, the activity includes pedestrians mingling or moving along the sidewalk and a motorcycle prominently placed to the right, suggesting modernity and speed. The approach to the figures is impressionistic, with less focus on detailed facial features and more focus on conveying the group as a whole.Overall, "The Boulevards" is reflective of Bonnard's unique style, which often combines elements of Impressionism with his individualist techniques, capturing a moment in time with both warmth and dynamism. This painting invites viewers into a fleeting moment of city life, characterized by the rush and intermingling of both light and shadow.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
