More about this artwork

"The Children's Meal" by Pierre Bonnard is an impressionistic painting that vividly captures a domestic scene centered around a mealtime shared by children and an adult. In the painting, there are three primary figures seated around a dining table that's set with plates and bowls, indicating a moment during or just prior to eating. On the left side of the painting, there's an adult figure, likely a woman based on the silhouette, whose face is turned towards a child in the center. This child, whose back is towards the viewer, appears engaged with something on the table, possibly food or a dish. On the right, there's another child who seems younger, gazing outward with an expression of curiosity or distraction. This child's face is more directly visible to the viewer, highlighted by Bonnard’s use of lighter, softer colors around the child’s face, contrasting with the otherwise muted palette of the setting. The setting itself feels intimate and slightly closed off, with part of a door and floral-patterned wallpaper in the background, enhancing the interior domestic feel. Bonnard's use of brushwork gives a soft, almost dream-like quality to the scene, blurring details into feelings and impressions rather than sharp, realistic depictions.Overall, the painting evokes a sense of everyday family life, with all its tranquility and tenderness, encapsulated beautifully through Bonnard’s impressionistic style.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
