More about this artwork

The painting "Women With A Dog" by Pierre Bonnard, created in 1891, encapsulates a vivid and intimate moment featuring a group of figures in a lush, floral setting. The artwork is distinguished by Bonnard's distinct use of color and form which creates a tapestry of visual stimulation. At the forefront, the painting shows three primary figures—a woman, a child, and a large dog. The woman is dressed in a striking, checkered blue and white outfit, adorned with a green and red floral scarf around her neck. Her posture, as she leans forward, suggests a moment of interaction or play with the dog, which is painted in warm golden tones. The expression on her face, although subdued, implies a gentle affection or concentration. The child, on her right side, is partly obscured by the woman but seems to be in a blue dress, lending a playful, youthful aura to the scene. The child’s vibrant orange and yellow hair adds a dynamic touch to the image. In the background, slightly out of focus and appearing almost as an impressionistic blot of color, are three more figures—two women and a man—rendered in darker shades. This group forms a visual anchor in the composition, enhancing the depth and providing a contrast to the brightly illuminated foreground. The setting of the image is lush, with broad, leafy strokes of green and patches of white that might suggest clusters of flowers or dappled light.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
