More about this artwork

This image appears to be an expressive, rather abstract piece, though it is not typical of what is known from Pierre Bonnard's more famous colorful, intimate portrayals of domestic life. Here we see a dark, monochrome texture dominated by blacks and deep shadows, suggesting this may be a manipulated or altered image rather than an original as you’ve described. The scene itself does not immediately suggest the vivid and lively scenes of Parisian life typically associated with the title "Les Parisiennes." The composition is chaotic with organic forms that resemble foliage or brush strokes that create a setting that feels more like a dense forest or a tumult of abstract forms than a depiction of Parisian women or city life. There's a contrast in the areas that appear lighter, possibly suggesting openings or clearings, but there is no clear representation of human figures or urban elements that are typically recognizable. This painting, as described, would be atypical for Bonnard, whose works are usually known for their vibrant use of color and light. Perhaps more context about the piece or insights into a specific period of Bonnard's career might help clarify the intent and content of this work. If this is indeed a work titled "Les Parisiennes" by Pierre Bonnard, it could be an experimental piece or part of a less known aspect of his artistic exploration.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
