More about this artwork

The painting "Women With A Dog" by Pierre Bonnard, completed in 1891, is an intriguing and vibrant piece that showcases the artist’s affection for intimate, everyday scenes. In this painting, Bonnard captures a moment shared between two women and a dog in a lush, garden-like environment. The central figure, a woman in a striking blue and white checkered dress with a polka-dot scarf, is depicted bending over to pet a large, tan-colored dog. Her pose is tender and attentive, suggesting a moment of affectionate interaction with the animal. The dog, on its part, seems to be enjoying the attention, turning its head towards her.To the right of the painting stands another woman, wearing a deep blue dress, who gently places her hand on the back of the first woman, adding an additional layer of intimacy and connection between the human subjects. Her expression and the overall posture suggest comfort and familiarity, possibly indicating a close relationship between the two women. The background is somewhat abstract, with dappled areas of green that could be interpreted as foliage, giving the impression that this scene is set outdoors.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
