More about this artwork

The painting titled "Bermuda: Houses Seen Through Trees" by Marsden Hartley depicts a dreamy, abstracted landscape scene where elements of architecture and nature subtly intertwine. Hartley employs a subdued yet warm palette mostly consisting of browns, grays, and pale greens. These colors contribute to a sense of tranquility and softness. At first glance, the focus appears on the two trees in the foreground, characterized by their curvaceous, twisting trunks and delicately outlined leaf canopies. These trees frame the composition and seem to act as veils through which we view the houses in the background. The tree canopies are painted in a manner that suggests soft, diffused foliage, adding a touch of nature's texture.Behind these foreground trees, the houses are depicted in an abstract form. Hartley doesn't delve into intricate architectural details but rather uses blocks of color to represent the structures' essence. These color blocks in various shades of orange and gray are geometric and overlapping, implying multiple perspectives and the depth of the scene.Notably, the overall atmosphere is calm and somewhat ethereal, likely capturing the essence of a quiet neighborhood in Bermuda as seen through a soft focus.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
