More about this artwork

In the delightful 1902 painting "Far from it" by Samuel Ehrhart, we observe a captivating moment between two elegantly dressed women on a golf course. In this scene, Ehrhart captures not only the fashion of the early 20th century but also the emerging social dynamic of women engaging in sports, a relatively modern concept at the time. The painting features two primary figures, both women, clad in chic, period-specific sportswear, complete with hats that were fashionable at the time. The woman on the left stands poised with her golf club, looking quizzically at her companion, who appears to be in mid-conversation, possibly offering advice or commentary on the game. This interaction is set against a serene backdrop of a lush golf course, under a soft, expansive sky.The artwork is marked by its vibrant color palette and the careful attention to the textures and patterns of the women’s clothing, demonstrating Ehrhart's skill in illustrating both character expression and contemporary fashion. The placement of other players in the distant background adds depth to the scene and emphasizes the popularity of golf as a pastime."Far from it" is more than just a depiction of leisure; it serves as a subtle commentary on the social roles and expectations of women at the turn of the century, reflecting their gradual shift from mere socialites to active participants in public life and sports.
