More about this artwork

This painting by Utagawa Yoshikazu titled "Franse Vrouw Te Paard Met Chinese Bediende En Kind" (French Woman on Horseback with Chinese Servant and Child) is a striking depiction which fuses various cultural elements within a single frame. It portrays a woman, presumably French, seated elegantly on a horse. She is dressed in stylish, vibrant attire—a blue overcoat with yellow and blue colored features, and a large pink skirt. The woman holds a flower in one hand, extending it outward, lending the scene a genteel touch. To her side, a Chinese servant and a child are depicted. The servant, dressed in traditional blue and black robes, appears attentive and holds a cup, possibly offering tea. The child, who is reaching out towards the flower, mimics the servant's attire and adds a playful element to the scene. The background is primarily text-filled, likely providing context or perhaps a narrative, which is typical of many Ukiyo-e prints where text and image often combine to convey more in-depth stories or poems. The horse, detailed with expressive eyes and a noticeable bridle, stands out through its realistic portrayal and contrast against the human figures.Overall, the composition is balanced and harmonizes the interplay of various cultural outfits and symbols. This artwork reflects Yoshikazu's skill in creating scenes that feature a mix of influences, showcasing how Japan perceived and artistically represented foreigners and their cultures during the Edo period.

Utagawa Yoshikazu (CA. 1850–1870) was one of the great Japanese painters of the Edo period. Through his Ukiyo-e style, he brilliantly depicted the Japanese middle-class story, as well as the Western foreigners who came to live and work in Japan during the same period.
