More about this artwork

This captivating painting by Utagawa Yoshikazu, titled "Shō Utsushi Igirisujin" (An Imitation of an Englishman), depicts an interesting and somewhat curious interpretation of Western figures through Japanese eyes during the Edo period. The artwork shows two Western figures and a dog.On the left, a woman is depicted wearing a vibrantly colored dress in red, green, and blue. Her attire is elaborate with puffed sleeves, ruffles, and multiple layers, topped off with a cascade of ribbons and striped patterns, representing a romanticized view of Western fashion from that era. Her bonnet, adorned with flowers and lace, complements her extravagant outfit.Beside her stands a man in a much more subdued but formal attire. He wears a dark naval officer's coat decorated with epaulettes, a bow tie, and a high top hat, showcasing authority and a formal demeanor typical of the mid-19th century Western military or noble attire.

Utagawa Yoshikazu (CA. 1850–1870) was one of the great Japanese painters of the Edo period. Through his Ukiyo-e style, he brilliantly depicted the Japanese middle-class story, as well as the Western foreigners who came to live and work in Japan during the same period.
