More about this artwork

This beautiful painting, "American Steamship Off The Coast Of Yokohama" by Utagawa Yoshikazu, captures an intriguing intersection of American and Japanese maritime culture during the mid-19th century. The artwork is a woodblock print, which is a technique Utagawa Yoshikazu, among other Japanese artists of the era, used to create intricately detailed and vividly colored images. The focus of the artwork is a large, robust American steamship, characterized by its detailed black hull and multiple decks, which are accented with decorative elements and circular patterns that denote portholes. The ship’s majestic sails are predominantly displayed, blending seamlessly into the cloudy sky above. On the deck, you can see figures dressed in Western attire, suggesting they might be American sailors or passengers overseeing the voyage. Their presence underscores the theme of cultural exchange and international travel during a period when Japan was increasingly opening up to the West.In the background, there are additional ships, possibly a mix of Western and Eastern designs, hinting at the busy maritime route and the fusion of international influences in Yokohama, a principal port city that was significant in Japan’s trade and interaction with the world at that time. The print’s background is a serene seascape with soft blue tones and gentle waves, contrasted by distant islands with lush greenery, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting.

Utagawa Yoshikazu (CA. 1850–1870) was one of the great Japanese painters of the Edo period. Through his Ukiyo-e style, he brilliantly depicted the Japanese middle-class story, as well as the Western foreigners who came to live and work in Japan during the same period.
