More about this artwork

The painting "Male Model, Academy Study" by Albert Edelfelt, created between 1874 and 1875, beautifully captures the form of a male model through a rich and nuanced study of the human anatomy. In this portrait, the model is depicted from the side in a half-turn pose that allows for a detailed examination of his muscular torso and arms. His face is also partially visible, portrayed with a sharp profile accentuating his strong jawline and prominent nose. The artist’s attention to detail is evident in the lifelike rendering of the model's skin tones and the play of light and shadow across his body, highlighting the muscular structure and the physical contours. Edelfelt has masterfully employed a relatively dark and subdued palette, with the model dramatically lit against a dark, almost indistinct background, focusing attention solely on the physical form and expression of the figure. The texture and brush strokes suggest a blend of both academic rigor in anatomical study and a freer, more expressive approach to capturing the immediacy and vitality of the human figure. The overall impact of the painting is one of strength and stillness, giving an impression of a moment captured in time, reflective yet powerful.
