More about this artwork

"Apple Harvest" by Camille Pissarro is a vibrant and textured painting that captures the essence of rural agricultural life. The artwork presents a scene of workers engaged in the task of apple picking, a seasonal activity that symbolizes the bountifulness of autumn. In the foreground, several figures are actively involved in different stages of harvesting. One man, standing, uses a long stick to knock apples from the higher branches of a tree, while others, both men and women, are stooped or bent, gathering apples into baskets. The landscape is dotted with apple trees, under which the ground appears speckled with the fallen fruits. Towards the midground, a woman stands, watching over the work, her pose contemplative or supervisory, adding a sense of calm oversight to the busy scene. Further in the background, a horse-drawn cart is subtly visible, perhaps waiting to transport the harvested apples.Pissarro's technique here is distinctly impressionistic, characterized by the lively, dappled application of paint, which creates a dynamic, shimmering effect. This technique not only vividly portrays the texture of the foliage and the grass but also imparts a lively atmosphere to the scene.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
