More about this artwork

This painting, "Self Portrait" by Camille Pissarro, captures the artist in his later years, offering an introspective look through his visage and surroundings. Pissarro is depicted as an elder man with a significant white beard and glasses, characteristics that add to the sense of wisdom and experience that permeates the portrait. He wears a dark, broad coat and a beret, attire that is typical of the period and reflective of his artistic identity. In his hands, he holds a palette and brushes, clearly positioning himself in the act of painting, which suggests his deep connection to his profession and passion. The background features a glimpse of a window and curtain, painted in a style that emphasizes texture over detail, characteristic of the Impressionist movement with which Pissarro was affiliated. The brushwork is loose and expressive, a style Pissarro helped pioneer. The colors primarily focus on earth tones, punctuated by the bright reds on his palette, perhaps hinting at the vibrancy still alive in his work despite his old age. The painting not only serves as a physical likeness but also as a reflection of Pissarro’s artistic journey, capturing the essence of his life as a dedicated and influential painter.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
