More about this artwork

This painting by Camille Pissarro illustrates a serene, pastoral scene, capturing a moment of repose for two young peasant girls in the fields near Pontoise, a rural locale that often inspired Pissarro. The artwork, executed with Pissarro's characteristic Impressionist style, uses loose brush strokes and a vibrant palette to convey the texture and lushness of the countryside. The two girls are positioned in the foreground, dominating the canvas, while immersed in a natural, tranquil environment. One girl, seen from the back, wears a brightly colored red and white headscarf and a blue-and-white striped blouse, indicative of the rural, practical attire of the period. The other girl, facing her companion, is clad in earthy tones and a yellow headscarf, hinting at her interaction or conversation with her fellow laborer. The background features sparsely dotted trees and shrubs under a soft sky, with gentle hints of habitation in the far distance, possibly suggesting the proximity to Pontoise. A glimpse of grazing cattle adds a further element of rustic life. The whole composition is bathed in natural light, highlighting patches of greens, yellows, and blues across the field, which suggest the diversity and wildness of the vegetation.Pissarro’s technique of capturing light and the vivacity of the outdoor setting not only portrays the beauty of the landscape but also subtly emphasizes the connection between the peasants and their environment, a recurring theme in his work.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
