More about this artwork

The painting "Orchard in Bloom, Louveciennes" by Camille Pissarro is a delightful depiction of a spring day in the countryside. This artwork exemplifies Pissarro's characteristic style, as a key member of the Impressionist movement. The scene is set in an orchard in Louveciennes, a village northwest of Paris where Pissarro spent some time and produced many of his landscape paintings. In the foreground, vibrant splashes of white and green dominate as we see fruit trees in full bloom. The trees are rendered with quick, dappled brushstrokes that capture the fleeting effects of light and color. The central tree, densely clustered with blossoms, is particularly eye-catching against the loosely defined sky.The earth around the trees is depicted in browns and muted tones, suggesting the freshly tilled soil of spring, ready for the season's growth. Two figures, one bending over near the central tree and another standing to the right, are involved in tending to the orchard.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
