More about this artwork

This eye-catching woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika depicts a dramatic scene from Kabuki theatre featuring two actors in their roles as historical figures. On one side, you see the actor Kawarazaki Gonnosuke portraying Takechi Mitsuhide, his intense expression and dynamic posture conveying a moment of high drama. On the other side, Ichikawa Sadanji appears as Mashiba Hisayoshi, also captured in an expressive pose and facial expression, highlighting the theatricality and emotional intensity characteristic of Kabuki. The use of vibrant colors and intricate patterns in their costumes is notable, with deep purples, bright yellows, and rich blues creating a visually stimulating tableau. Each character's costume is elaborately decorated, reflecting their status and personality. The background is minimal, allowing the figures and their expressive faces to dominate the composition. The attention to detail in the representation of traditional Kabuki makeup (kumadori) enhances the dramatic effect, emphasizing the actors' emotions and the tension of the scene. The artwork not only captures a moment from a play but also acts as a historical record of the Kabuki theatre and the popular cultural expressions of the time when Toyohara Kunichika was active.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the most successful Japanese woodblock print artists during the Edo period. His passion for Kabuki shows drove him to mainly focus on producing prints of actors and actresses from Kabuki scenes, by using the Ukiyo-e style.
