More about this artwork

This striking painting by Toyohara Kunichika is a vivid portrait of a Kabuki actor, capturing the dramatic flair and intense expression characteristic of traditional Japanese theater. The actor is depicted with a heavily stylized and exaggerated facial makeup known as "kumadori," which is used to signify his role, emotions, and the nature of the character he portrays. In this case, the red and white makeup suggests a powerful and perhaps heroic or antagonistic character, common in Kabuki performances. The actor’s attire is similarly dramatic, featuring bold patterns and colors that complement the expressiveness of his makeup. The slight turn of his head and the sharp gaze give an impression of dynamism and a moment caught in action, a common element in portraits of Kabuki actors, which aims to convey the intensity and emotion of the theatrical performance. The background elements are minimal, directing full focus on the actor himself. The text and seals in the painting likely provide information about the play, the actor’s role, or the artist’s signature, anchoring the work in the cultural and historical context of its creation. This piece is a wonderful example of ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during the Edo period, often featuring scenes from folklore, popular culture, and theater like this one.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the most successful Japanese woodblock print artists during the Edo period. His passion for Kabuki shows drove him to mainly focus on producing prints of actors and actresses from Kabuki scenes, by using the Ukiyo-e style.
