More about this artwork
This image titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 482" shows a photograph of a snowflake captured by Wilson Bentley, who was renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes in great detail. Bentley's photographs, like the one depicted here, reveal the intricate and unique designs of individual snowflakes, showcasing their symmetrical, geometric forms which appear almost hand-drawn due to their detailed and delicate structures. The snowflake in this particular image displays a complex pattern with several arms extending from a central point, each featuring additional branches and intricate patterning that includes various tiny shapes and forms within. Bentley’s technique involved capturing these snowflakes on black velvet before they melted, allowing the stark contrast to highlight the delicate, lace-like designs of the ice crystals. His work not only contributed significantly to the field of photomicrography but also to our understanding of snow crystal formation and variation, emphasizing the natural mantra that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. Bentley's photographs remain celebrated for their combination of scientific method and artistic sensibility, beautifully encapsulated in images like this one.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
