More about this artwork

The painting titled "Count Muffat's First View of Nana at the Theatre" by Charles Demuth vividly encapsulates a scene that is both theatrical and intimate. In the center of the composition, a large, central figure, likely representing Nana, stands nude with an emphatic pose that commands attention. This central figure, drawn with delicate lines and pale washes of color, starkly contrasts with the shadowy, abstracted audience depicted in darker hues that fill the background.Looking on from the bottom right, there is a pair of figures in more detailed, yet still softly blurred, attire that suggests they might be part of the higher society, emphasizing the divide between the spectacle and the spectators. The use of bright yellows and blues adds a dream-like quality to the scene, highlighting the dramatic and surreal atmosphere of the theatre.Overall, Demuth's use of watercolor contributes to the ethereal quality of the scene, blurring the lines between reality and performance, and capturing the mesmerizing impact Nana has on Count Muffat and the audience. The portrayal suggests themes of voyeurism, allure, and the clash of different social environs, all common in theatrical settings.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
