More about this artwork

The painting titled "Nude, Sitting on the Couch" (1925-1926) by Edvard Munch showcases a female figure seated on a couch. Her body is rendered with broad, expressive brushstrokes, characteristic of Munch's style, which give the painting a vibrant and somewhat unsettled energy. The colors used are rich and varied, with shades of blue, green, pink, and yellow which contour the form and add depth to the figure and her surroundings. The woman’s pose and expression seem introspective and slightly melancholic, a common theme in Munch's works, reflecting his interest in capturing psychological states and emotions. Her gaze is directed towards the viewer, creating a direct and possibly confrontational interaction. The background and the surroundings, including a window and what appears to be books, are abstracted, focusing attention on her form and facial expression. This setting enhances the intimate yet somber mood of the scene.Munch's use of color and line not only shapes the physical form of the woman but also suggests a broader narrative about her inner life and feelings, making this painting not just a simple portrait but a deeper exploration of human emotion and vulnerability.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
