More about this artwork

"Two Nudes Embracing" by Edward Burne-Jones presents a delicate yet evocative portrait, executed primarily in pencil. In this artwork, Burne-Jones captures a tender moment between two figures entwined in an embrace. Their bodies are closely pressed together, conveying a deep sense of intimacy and unity. The figures are depicted with a soft, masterful use of line that highlights their forms without harsh detail, lending the work a dream-like quality. The facial expressions and positioning of the bodies suggest not just physical closeness but emotional resonance as well; one figure gazes upward with what might be interpreted as a look of devotion or contemplation, while the other inclines their head towards their partner's, suggesting comfort or consolation. These subtle cues open the artwork to various interpretations, reflecting themes of love, vulnerability, and connection.Burne-Jones' skill in rendering the human form is evident, with each muscle and contour of their bodies carefully delineated to showcase both strength and gentleness. The detail in the bodywork contrasts with the lightly sketched background, which fades into the undefined light, focusing all attention on the figures themselves.Overall, this piece is a beautiful representation of human emotion and physicality, done in a style that is both realistic and gently idealized.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
