In the lush, verdant landscape of Henri Rousseau's "The Equatorial Jungle," numerous types of tropical plants densely populate the canvas, creating an immersive sense of depth and variety. Among these plants, large leaves and exotic flowers dominate, offering shades of green accented by soft pinks and whites. There are intricate layers of foliage, with some leaves detailed in dark, others in light greens, and yet others almost blue or yellow under different lights.Toward the lower center of the composition, partially hidden within the undergrowth, two pairs of animal eyes peer out cautiously. These creatures seem enveloped by the dense flora, almost as if they are a part of it. Above and around these mysterious eyes, the plant life includes tall, sharp-edged leaves and broad, rounded leaves, evoking the untamed and diverse vitality of a jungle. Flowers in various hues and sizes add touches of color to this green world.The overall effect is a rich tapestry of nature, full of texture and life, inviting viewers to look closely to discover hidden details beneath the layers of jungle growth.

Despite never attending a formal art school, Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) is wildly recognized as a self-taught genius, who left a lasting legacy to the avant-garde movement. Rousseau practiced painting and drawing by copying artworks in the art museums of Paris in his spare time. Since he never studied anatomy and perspective at an art school, he developed a unique artistic style known as 'Naive' or 'Primitive'. His paintings are often depicted in a childish or dreamlike manner with their vivid colors, ambiguous spaces, and non-realistic scale. Most of his signature paintings portray wild animals or human figures in the jungle. His artwork was not accepted by the conservative critics so he became a member of the Parisian artistic and literary avant-garde movement where his works extensively influenced several generations of avant-garde artists and surrealists.
