The painting depicts an abstract interpretation of waves and a sun. The background is a deep blue, possibly representing the sea or the sky. Dominating the composition is a large, curving wave rendered in a bright white, with edges highlighted in a thin gray line that suggest movement and froth. This wave encircles a gray, circular form in the center, likely representing the sun. Smaller, similar waves, also in white, appear at the bottom, echoing the shape and motion of the larger wave.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition.
