The woman, positioned towards the left side of the painting, leans over the boy, who appears to be nude and held or supported by her. The woman's figure, possibly depicted as seated, dominates the composition, and her attention is focused intently on the boy.The work showcases Cassatt's adept use of watercolors to create soft and fluid lines, which impart a sense of warmth and immediacy to the scene. The choice of colors is delicate, with gentle hues of brown, peach, and hints of green and blue, contributing to the overall softness of the image. Cassatt's brushwork allows the figures to emerge from the background almost effortlessly, with a lightness that complements the intimate and protective gesture of the woman towards the child. The painting evokes themes of maternal care and affection, a frequent subject in Cassatt’s work, reflecting her interest in the social and private lives of women. With its impressionistic style, the image captures a moment that feels both universal and deeply personal, emphasizing the emotional bond between the child and the adult.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.
She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
