More about this artwork

Crafted by the deft hands of Swedish artist Nils Kreuger in 1903, "Foal" is a captivating representation of the serene yet spirited essence of nature. This painting portrays a gentle and contemplative young foal standing in a lush meadow at dusk. The background is a striking canvas of the setting sun, bursting with a vibrant orange glow that radiates across the sky, filled with a myriad of minute, speckled brush strokes that suggest the fleeting moment before nightfall. The landscape is rich and textured, blending deep greens and blues of the foliage with the warm hues of the sunset. The forestation at the right, dense and mysterious, contrasts with the openness of the field, adding a dimensional yet harmonious balance to the scene. In the foreground, two clogs lay beside the foal, a subtle indication of human presence, hinting at the intersection of human and animal domains. This piece, like many of Kreuger’s works, vividly captures the nuances of light and the vibrant rhythm of life in the Swedish countryside, evoking feelings of peace and introspection. It’s an exquisite example of eradicating the division between an animal and its habitat, portraying them as one entity bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.
