More about this artwork

"Anfang von Bild III," created in 1912 by artist Ernst Stern, invites viewers into a vividly depicted and mysterious tableau. The painting portrays an enigmatic scene set within a dramatically curtained space. In this semi-theatrical setting, figures are busily engaged in what appears to be an intricate operation or performance of some sort.Central to the composition are two massive, ornate chandeliers, their intricate designs hanging heavily above the scene, casting an otherworldly glow that reflects off the dark, draped curtains. These luminescent fixtures seem to take on a life of their own, contributing to the painting’s sense of depth and dimension.Below them, the figures are captured in various actions: some are pulling ropes, others hold lanterns, and a group appears to be moving a large box or staging. Their task seems urgent, conducted under the watchful eye of a dark, expansive backdrop, suggesting that their activities are of significant importance. Each character is detailed meticulously, suggesting a narrative that remains just beyond reach, compelling the viewer to ponder the context of their endeavors. This painting exemplifies Stern's capacity to blend elements of reality with those of fantasy, creating an atmosphere brimming with tension and intrigue.

Ernst Stern (1 April 1876 – 28 August 1954) was a Romanian-German scenic designer who, through his collaborations with most of the prominent German directors of the early 20th century, helped define the aesthetic of expressionism in both the theatre and the cinema.
