More about this artwork
Painted by Jean François Raffaëlli around 1899, "Élégante sur le Boulevard des Italiens, Paris" is an exquisite representation of Parisian life at the turn of the 20th century. This artwork beautifully captures the vibrant atmosphere of one of Paris's most famous streets, known for its cafes, boutiques, and, notably, its elegant pedestrians. In the painting, the focus is drawn to a well-dressed woman in the foreground. She strides confidently down the boulevard, clad in a stylish dark gown accentuated with a white lace scarf and a dark cape. Her expression is serene, her gaze direct, suggesting a woman of purpose and sophistication. She wears a small hat adorned with flowers, poised elegantly on her flowing hair, and her gloves and tightly held umbrella suggest a chilly or perhaps rainy day in Paris. The background teems with other figures, each illustrated with remarkable detail that speaks to Raffaëlli's skill in capturing the human form and the dynamic energy of city life. The blurred faces and varied postures create a sense of movement and buzz. Noticeably, there's a small dog in the scene, adding a touch of quaint charm to the bustling street scene. This painting not only showcases Raffaëlli’s talent for realism and character study but also beautifully encapsulates an era of Parisian elegance and the lively ambiance of the Boulevard des Italiens.
