More about this artwork
1850) by David CoxDavid Cox's exquisite watercolor, "River Landscape in Wales," painted around 1850, captures the rugged beauty of the Welsh countryside with a poetic sensibility that is both atmospheric and vivid. The painting invites viewers into a serene yet dynamic landscape, characterized by its rough, textured mountains and the lively, flowing river that cuts through the terrain. The heart of the composition is the river, rendered with skillful brushstrokes that convey the movement of water tumbling over rocks. Its banks are framed by rugged mountainsides, suggesting the enduring presence of nature's raw forms, shaped over millennia. The colors utilized by Cox—earthy browns, muted greens, and soft blues—are typical of his work, reflecting the true colors of the Welsh landscape under a cloud-softened sky.In the midst of this natural scene, a small cluster of buildings suggests human habitation, harmoniously integrated within the vastness of the untouched environment. This inclusion adds a layer of narrative to the scene, creating a sense of timelessness and the enduring relationship between humans and nature."River Landscape in Wales" is a testament to Cox's mastery in capturing the essence of landscape with emotional depth and technical precision.

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.
He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.
Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter."
His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809–1885), was also a successful artist.
