More about this artwork

"By the Stream" is a captivating landscape painting by Ľudovít Čordák, crafted between the years 1896 and 1898. This work beautifully encapsulates the essence of a serene natural environment, inviting the viewer into a moment of tranquility and deep contemplation. The composition focuses on a lush, verdant scene where a large, robust tree dominates the foreground. Its intricate branches and foliage stretch outward, partially obscuring the sky yet drawing attention to the subtle play of light and shadow. Below, a calm stream meanders gently through the landscape, reflecting the soft, muted tones of the sky and its immediate surroundings.Čordák masterfully captures the distinct textures of the tree bark and the delicate grasses that sway near the water’s edge, enhancing the painting's depth and realism. The distant background fades into a haze of blue and gray, possibly suggesting the onset of evening or a misty morning. This piece is not just a visual exploration but also an emotional journey. It reflects a deep appreciation for the untouched beauty of nature and the quiet moments it offers away from the bustle of everyday life.

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian painter who settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
