More about this artwork

Paul Klee’s “Virgin (Dreaming)” painted in 1903, showcases an ethereal and dream-like visualization that delves deeply into the realms of symbolism and expressionism, both hallmark elements of Klee's artistic style. This etching is a compelling study of form and fantasy, conveying a rich narrative through delicate yet dynamic lines. At the center of this piece, a singularly crafted figure, a female form, stretches across the frame in a provocative yet graceful pose, embodying both vulnerability and strength. Klee’s exquisite detail to the muscular contours and delicate posture suggest a dream state, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur.Surrounding this central figure are intricate, almost barren tree-like forms that appear to intertwine with the figure itself, suggesting an organic connection between human and nature. Above, a small, winged creature, perhaps a bird or an angel, adds an element of mystique and guides the viewers' eyes beyond the immediate to the suggestive limitless skies, reinforcing the dream-like quality of the artwork."Virgin (Dreaming)" invites viewers into a surreal narrative that transcends the typical portrayal of reality, prompting an introspective look into one's subconscious mind and natural existence.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
